A job is for life, not just for Christmas....

“A job is for life, not just for Christmas…” – a little known phrase, as the festive period doesn’t exactly chime with job applications and recruitment. However, of more than 500 human resources or hiring managers surveyed by Accounting Principals, a recruiting company under the umbrella of Adecco Group North America, 94% recommend job-seekers keep up their search through the end of the year. Here’s why…
1) LESS COMPETITION
Whilst the Yuletide slump might not seem like the most appetising of times to apply for work, there is no drop in vacancy postings over this period. There is, however, a hugely significant drop in the number of applications as job seekers wind down and take time off to spend with friends and family. This means any applicant over the festive period will automatically be faced with far less competition.
2) RECRUITERS WILL LOVE YOU
December is a universally slow month for recruiters, so putting yourself out there during the festive season will certainly put you in their good books. Moreover, Christmas is a time to be kind and charitable, so take advantage of this festive good cheer and get them to send you out for some roles! Not only will they be thankful for your business during this stagnant period, but they are more likely to be in a better mood to deal with your requests.
3) EMPLOYERS ARE READY FOR YOU
By December, many employers have anticipated their needs for the next year, and with their budgets set, they've already begun the search for candidates so they can hit the ground running in the New Year. So make life easy for them and present yourself just when they are looking for you!
4) YOU’LL BEAT THE JANUARY RUSH
Research by totaljobs.com suggests that January 7th is the most popular day for job applications to be submitted. Get yours done a month early and you’ll beat the rush, stand out from the crowd, and see the New Year in feeling smug.
5) YOU CAN RELAX OVER CHRISTMAS
Needing a job can be an incredibly daunting thing to have hanging over you. So why put it off and extend that worry just because the end of the year is approaching? Get it done in December and have a relaxing start to the New Year, knowing you already have a whole host of applications under your belt.
So lift yourself and your extra Christmas weight off the sofa, cork the mulled wine, brush off the empty Celebration wrappers and get sending out that CV!
